Membership contracts explained: joining fees, minimum terms, freezes and the clauses that cost you

Premium club contracts run twelve months, roll monthly after, and hide the expensive parts in the freeze and cancellation terms. What each clause means, what the chains typically do, and what the CMA says they cannot.

The twelve-month question

Annual contracts are 15 to 25 percent cheaper per month than rolling ones. If you are confident you will stay a year, take it. If you are not, the monthly premium is cheaper than paying out a contract you stop using in March. Most people overestimate their year; our calculator (not yet available) shows the break-even.

Freezes

Freezing is cheaper than cancelling and rejoining (which usually triggers a new joining fee and possibly a new minimum term). Medical freezes with a GP note are normally free; lifestyle freezes cost £5 to £15 a month. Check minimum freeze length and whether frozen months extend your minimum term.

What the CMA says

The Competition and Markets Authority has pursued gym chains over unfair terms: lengthy notice periods after the minimum term, non-cancellable contracts on relocation, and unclear price-rise clauses. Terms that are unfair under consumer law are unenforceable regardless of what you signed. Citizens Advice can help if a club refuses a legitimate cancellation. See how to cancel a gym membership.

Negotiating

Joining fees are the easiest thing to have waived; ask at month end when sales targets bite. A free month or a tier upgrade for the first three months is common. Price itself rarely moves at premium chains, but the corporate and insurer routes on our paying less page do the same job.

FAQs

Common questions

Can I cancel a 12-month gym contract early?

Usually only for relocation, medical reasons or redundancy with evidence, as set out in the agreement. Unfair terms are unenforceable under consumer law; Citizens Advice can advise.

Is it cheaper to freeze or cancel?

Freezing, almost always. Cancelling and rejoining typically means a new joining fee and possibly a new minimum term.

Leaving anyway? Do it cleanly.
