How to cancel a gym membership in the UK, without the fight
Your rights, the chain-by-chain steps, what to do if they keep charging you, and a letter you can copy.
Updated September 2026 · Not legal advice
Your rights, briefly
- No contract: Bannatyne’s rolling plan and the flexible tiers at Nuffield and Virgin Active cancel with one month’s notice online or in writing.
- Fixed term: premium chains usually tie you in for 12 months. You can cancel after that with one month’s notice. Before that, you owe the remaining months unless an exception applies.
- Exceptions the CMA expects clubs to honour: a serious change in circumstances (injury or illness, redundancy, moving too far away), or the club closing or materially reducing facilities. Ask in writing; offer evidence.
- Cooling-off: if you joined online or by phone you have 14 days to cancel for a refund, minus any use.
- Direct debit: you can cancel it at your bank at any time. That stops payment; it does not end the contract, and the club can pursue arrears. Cancel with the club first, then the bank.
Step by step
- Find your contract end date and notice period in your account or joining email.
- Cancel in the app or member portal if the club offers it, and screenshot the confirmation.
- If not, email the club (not just reception) using the template below. Ask for written confirmation of the final payment date.
- Check your bank the month after. If a payment is taken after the end date, claim it back under the Direct Debit Guarantee and tell the club.
- If the club refuses a reasonable request, cite the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the CMA’s guidance on gym contracts, and say you will raise it with Citizens Advice.

12-month standard; written notice of one month after the term. Monthly rolling tier cancels with one month’s notice.
Council leisure (Better, Everyone Active)
Usually monthly rolling; cancel online or in centre with one month’s notice.

Cancel with the club in writing first. Cancel the direct debit second. Never the other way round.
