The £2,000 home gym: everything that matters, nothing connected

A rack, a bar, plates, a bench and adjustable dumbbells will train you for life. This is the list, with the order to buy it in if £2,000 is the ceiling or the starting point.

Why no cardio

A £2,000 budget does not stretch to a good bike or rower and a good rack. Strength kit lasts for decades and holds its value; cardio wears and dates. Run, cycle or skip outside for the first year, then add a WaterRower A1 at £849 when the budget recovers.

The order to buy in

Flooring, then dumbbells and bench, then rack, bar and plates. The first two items give you a complete programme for £840. The rack unlocks squats and presses with a barbell and is where beginners overspend first.

Where to buy

UK strength brands sell direct at these prices with delivery; look for a 12-month minimum warranty and steel thickness in the specification. Second-hand racks and plates are plentiful and lose nothing; see our second-hand guide.

Against the club

This set-up is roughly £35 a month over five years with resale. It beats every club on price. It loses to every club on pool, sauna and classes, and to EGYM on automatic progression. If you would use those, keep the membership and buy the dumbbells.

FAQs

Common questions

Can I build a home gym for £2,000?

Yes, a complete strength set-up: rack, bar, 100kg plates, bench, adjustable dumbbells and flooring. Cardio comes later.

What is the most important piece?

Flooring, then adjustable dumbbells and a bench. Those three give you a full programme for under £900.

Do I need a full rack?

No. A half rack with a pull-up bar and safeties does everything a home lifter needs in half the footprint.

Should I buy second-hand?

Racks and plates, yes: they do not wear. Benches and dumbbells, check for play and wobble first.
