Why this matters for a club member

Running and cycling outdoors are the two things a health club cannot sell you and the two that make a membership work better: you use the club for strength, the pool and recovery, and the road for cardio. A run club also solves the motivation problem more cheaply than any class pack.

Finding one

Instagram is the directory for community run clubs; search your city and “run club”. England Athletics’ club finder covers affiliated clubs. parkrun’s site lists every event. Brand stores publish schedules. Most groups welcome walk-ups and have a no-drop policy for the social runs.

Coached versus social

A social club gets you out of the door. An affiliated athletics club, for £30 to £150 a year, gets you a qualified coach, track sessions and a structured programme; it is the best coaching value in fitness by a wide margin and most members of premium gyms have never considered it.

Kit

Shoes matter; nothing else does. See premium training kit (not yet available) for the shoe brands and Garmin vs Apple Watch if you want to track it.
