Reading a timetable

Look for named programmes with a coach’s name attached, small-group formats, and anything that uses a heart-rate screen or equipment you cannot use alone (reformer, rig, Woodway). Skip the generic “Body Conditioning” slot unless the instructor is known to be good. Ask members; they know within a fortnight which classes are worth the alarm.

Les Mills, honestly

Licensed programmes (BodyPump, BodyCombat, RPM) are the same choreography in every club worldwide, refreshed quarterly. That is a feature: consistent, safe, well-designed. It is not boutique, and it does not need to be. Nuffield and Bannatyne lean on it heavily; David Lloyd and Third Space build their own.

Booking

Peak classes at good clubs book out the moment the window opens, typically seven days ahead at 7am or midnight. Set an alarm for the ones that matter and use the waitlist; no-show fines (£5 to £15) have made waitlists move. If a class you want is always full, the club is under-provisioned; tell the manager.

Versus a studio

If your club’s signature class is Blaze or a Third Space Signature, you have a boutique class included. If your club’s best offer is a Les Mills slot, a studio pack for the class you love is a reasonable addition. See boutique studios vs health clubs.

FAQs

Common questions

What is David Lloyd Blaze?

A 45-minute HIIT class combining treadmill, boxing and strength stations with heart-rate zones on screen. Included in most memberships and the closest thing to Barry’s inside a club.

Are club classes included in membership?

Almost always. Exceptions: some small-group training programmes, reformer at certain clubs, and premium-tier-only studios such as Virgin Active Collection.
