What the reformer does

A sliding carriage on springs turns bodyweight exercises into resistance work in any direction. It loads muscles through long ranges, demands control rather than force, and is kind to joints. Results people notice: posture, core control, mobility, a leaner look through the trunk. Results it will not give alone: significant strength or cardiovascular fitness; keep lifting and moving.

Your first class

Book a beginner or foundation class; do not walk into a level 2 flow. Grip socks are usually required and sold at reception. Expect to spend the first class learning the machine: spring settings, footbar, straps. It will feel slow and then, the next day, you will find muscles you did not know were there.

Qualifications that matter

Ask what training the instructors have. Comprehensive reformer certification (Balanced Body, STOTT/Merrithew, BASI, Polestar) is 400 to 500 hours; some fast-growing chains put instructors through a weekend. Physiotherapist-led clinical Pilates is the standard for rehab. A good studio publishes this.

Club or boutique

If your club includes reformer, use it; the machines are the same and the coaching is often comparable. Go boutique for smaller classes, more levels and a community built around it. Many members do both: club for volume, studio for the weekly class that really coaches them.

FAQs

Common questions

Is reformer Pilates good for weight loss?

Indirectly: it builds muscle control and supports other training, but a class burns modest calories. Combine with strength and cardio and eat well.

How often should I do reformer?

Twice a week is where most people see change; once maintains; three or more is a habit worth a membership.

Do I need grip socks?

Almost every studio requires them for hygiene and safety. £10 to £15 a pair; buy two.
