How to choose

Pick the format you will keep doing, then the studio nearest your commute, then the brand. Location beats brand every time; a class ten minutes away gets attended, one thirty minutes away does not. Almost every studio sells a discounted intro offer; use it before committing to a pack.

Reformer specifically

The fastest-growing category in UK fitness, with new studios opening weekly and quality all over the place. Look for instructor qualifications (comprehensive reformer training, not a weekend course), class size (eight to twelve), and progression (levels, not one-size). Club reformer classes at Third Space, Virgin Active Collection and some David Lloyd sites are included in membership and often as good.

Packs versus memberships

Packs expire (usually one to three months) and unused classes are the studios’ real margin. Buy a pack only if you can honestly book the classes in the window. Unlimited memberships pay off at eight or more a month; below that, drop-ins or ClassPass are cheaper.

FAQs

Common questions

Which is better, Barry’s or 1Rebel?

Barry’s for treadmill-based HIIT and a coached, competitive atmosphere; 1Rebel for production value and variety across HIIT, cycle and boxing. Both are excellent and expensive; trial both on intro offers.

Are reformer studios worth the price?

For small-class coaching on equipment you cannot use alone, yes, if you go weekly. Check instructor qualifications and try a club’s included reformer class first.

Want the classes without the packs? ClassPass, Wellhub and club memberships that include boutique.
