Why this works
Two days of alternating hot mineral water, cold plunges, rest and walking in a pretty town is the thermal circuit from your club spa (see wet spa explained) scaled up and slowed down. It delivers most of what people report from a £10,000 retreat week: sleep, calm, a reset. Baths cost €20 to €60 a day; a good hotel €150 to €400 a night.
Choosing
Baden-Baden for the ritual and the hotels. Budapest for grandeur and value. Bath for a UK weekend without a flight. Switzerland when money is not the constraint. Iceland for the landscape. Italy for the food and the mountains around the water.
Etiquette
Shower before entering, everywhere. Follow the textile rules of the specific bath; German and some Hungarian sessions are nude, most others require swimwear. Silence in saunas. Flip-flops. Do not swim laps in a thermal pool. See spa etiquette for the club-to-Europe differences.
Health
Hot mineral water is not a treatment for anything in particular despite two millennia of claims; it is warmth, buoyancy and rest, which are good for almost everyone. The same cautions as any wet spa apply: heart conditions, pregnancy, blood pressure, alcohol. Our sauna and cold plunge guide (not yet available) covers who should check with a GP first.
