Where the extra £8,000 goes

About £3,000 to cardio and a cable tower, £2,000 to better strength kit, and £2,000 to the room itself. The room is the part people skip and the part that decides whether you use it. Lighting, a mirror and a place for everything change a garage into a gym.

Choosing the connected machine

Bike if you have cycled or spun before; rower if you have not and want the whole body in one session. Peloton for classes, Technogym for build, Hydrow for rowing with a coach, WaterRower with a tablet if you would rather skip the subscription and spend the difference on plates.

The cable tower

A wall-mounted cable tower is the single most useful addition above the £2k build. Rows, pulldowns, flyes, triceps and rehab work that a rack cannot do. NOHrD SlimBeam is the beautiful version; UK strength brands sell functional ones for £900.

Against the club

Roughly £150 a month over five years with resale and subscriptions. That is a David Lloyd membership. You are no longer saving money; you are buying zero commute, no queue and a room you designed. For a two-person household training separately it wins again.

FAQs

Common questions

Is £10,000 too much for a home gym?

Not if you use it daily and the room is part of the house. It matches a premium membership on cost and beats it on convenience. It is too much if you train twice a week.

Bike or rower first?

Rower if you are new to both; it trains the whole body. Bike if you have a cycling habit already.

Do I need a lifting platform?

If you deadlift or do Olympic lifts, yes. A 2.4m by 1.8m platform protects the floor and the bar.

What about a treadmill?

A good treadmill is £2,500 to £10,000 and draws 700W. Run outside unless weather or safety rules it out, then look at the £50k guide.
