THE PICKS

Six bags worth your money

PRODUCT PHOTO

BEST OVERALL   £70-£90

The 25L work-to-gym backpack

The right size for kit plus a change of clothes, with a ventilated shoe pocket, a proper laptop sleeve and styling quiet enough for any office. The one we'd buy with our own money.

+ Genuinely does both jobs well    Too small for racket sports or big kits

PRODUCT PHOTO

BEST BUDGET   £25-£40

The no-frills 30L holdall

A classic barrel bag with one big compartment, an end shoe pocket and hardware that outlasts its price. Ideal if your gym and office aren't the same trip.

+ Unbeatable value, machine-washable    No laptop protection at all

PRODUCT PHOTO

BEST FOR WORK   £85-£110

The smart commuter with laptop sleeve

Reads as a work bag first: structured shape, top-loading laptop access, and a hidden bottom compartment that swallows trainers and a towel without bulging.

+ Looks right in a client meeting    Pricey, and the gym compartment is snug

PRODUCT PHOTO

BEST FOR SWIMMERS   £45-£65

The wet-dry separation bag

A fully lined waterproof section keeps swim kit sealed off from everything else, and it wipes clean. If your routine includes the pool, this is the feature that matters most.

+ Wet kit never touches dry kit    Utilitarian looks

PRODUCT PHOTO

MOST DURABLE   £95-£130

The lifetime-warranty duffel

Heavier fabric, oversized zips and a repair-or-replace warranty. Costs more upfront and settles the question for a decade.

+ Buy once, done    Heavy even when empty

PRODUCT PHOTO

BEST SMALL   £35-£55

The 15L minimalist

For travel-light members: shoes stay at the gym or on your feet, kit is a shirt and shorts. Packs down flat inside another bag for travel.

+ Featherweight, packs to nothing    No room for a towel and a laptop

How to choose a work-to-gym bag

Four things separate a good gym bag from a bag you happen to take to the gym. A separate ventilated compartment for shoes and wet kit, so Monday's towel never meets Tuesday's laptop. A padded laptop sleeve that opens flat or from the top, so you're not unpacking gym kit at security or in a cafe. Around 20 to 30 litres, enough for kit and a change of clothes, small enough for a commute. And quiet styling, no neon panels or slogan branding, so it reads as a work bag first.

Spend £40 to £90 for something that lasts years. Below that, zips and seams give out around the six-month mark; above £120 you're mostly paying for fashion, which is fine, as long as you know that's the deal.

FAQS

Common questions

Backpack or holdall?

Backpack if you commute by bike, train or on foot, your shoulders will thank you. Holdall if you drive and want the easiest access. Most work-to-gym members end up happier with a backpack.

What size do I actually need?

20 to 30 litres covers gym kit, a towel, toiletries and a change of clothes. Go bigger only if you carry swim kit and work clothes on the same day, or play a racket sport.

How do I stop my bag smelling?

Air it open every evening, never leave damp kit in it overnight, and wash or wipe the lining monthly. A ventilated shoe compartment helps more than any spray.
