Health clubs, gyms & leisure centres - the difference
Leisure centres are funded and managed by local authorities. The quality does vary as do the facilities, but normally they have a gym and aerobics studio, along with a swimming pool and basic shower and changing facilities.
A gym will usually have a gymnasium with free weights, machines and cardiovascular machines (e.g. treadmills, rowers, steppers) and there is also likely to be be an aerobics studio for a range of classes. There will normally be few frills, although there should be showering facilities. Gyms are a little more reasonably priced than health clubs, as the facilities are more basic.
A health club will offer the same as a gym, but will also have a wide range of additional facilities such as saunas, a swimming pool, Jacuzzi or spa, tennis and squash courts. Increasingly you are also able to have beauty treatments, physiotherapy and a pint or coffee. Needless to say membership is more pricey.
So how to choose when you think you've found the right health club?
Don't rush in. Some health clubs are not what they seem. The questions we prompted you with in Choosing a health club are designed to prompt answers that will help you decide if the club is right for you. 4,000 members - great you might think, must be good - until you need to get on some gym equipment on a Monday night…join the queue, the long queue!
So which one is right for you? No point joining a health club that gives you free saunas or beauty treatments, if all you want is to swim for 30 minutes twice a week. On the other hand if you go 4 times a week and are looking for a social scene, a health club could be right up your street.
In summary
Go and look at the club, make sure you want and need all the facilities, make sure you are given an introduction session on the equipment when you join and ask if you can have a trial session to make up your mind. Finally make sure it really is easy to get to, makes getting there easier on those cold nights!
Now you've had a chance to see our advice, go search for a gym.
